To show  ability to assess and manage primary varicose veins

Aetiology

Anatomy of the venous system

Describe the major venous anatomical variants

Normal venous haemodynamics

Function of the venous endothelium

Conservative treatments

 Indications for treatment for varicose veins

Complications of varicose veins

Examination of the venous system of the lower limbs

Select patients who require treatment

Non-operative management

Recurrent Varicose veins

    To show ability to assess and manage recurrent varicose veins

Aetiology of recurrent varicose veins

Assessment by examination and appropriate investigations

Selection of patients for treatment

Complications

    To show ability to assess and manage the complications of varicose veins  

Complications of varicose veins:

Varicose eczema, phlebitis, bleeding, ulceration, malignancy

Appropriate investigations

Investigation by duplex ultrasound

Non-operative management methods: support hosiery,

4 layer bandaging, skin grafting. Operative treatment and indications
