To show ability to assess and manage primary varicose veins
- Aetiology
- Anatomy of the venous system
- Describe the major venous anatomical variants
- Normal venous haemodynamics Function of the venous endothelium
- Conservative treatments Indications for treatment for varicose veins
- Complications of varicose veins Examination of the venous system of the lower limbs
- Select patients who require treatment
- Non-operative management
Recurrent Varicose Veins
To show ability to assess and manage recurrent varicose veins
- Aetiology of recurrent varicose veins
- Assessment by examination and appropriate investigations
- Selection of patients for treatment
Complications
To show ability to assess and manage the complications of varicose veins
- Complications of varicose veins:
- Varicose eczema, phlebitis, bleeding, ulceration, malignancy
- Appropriate investigations
- Investigation by duplex ultrasound
- Non-operative management methods: support hosiery
- 4 layer bandaging, skin grafting
- Operative treatment and indications
